A popular Peterborough poppy seller had a hair raising experience while raising hundreds of pounds in the city centre.
George Bennett (63), has organised the Royal British Legion’s Poppy Appeal in the city for a number of years - and today (Thursday) he added another £400 to the pot by having his hair - and huge side burns - shaved off in front of Peterborough Town Hall.
George said: “I was dared to grow my hair and get it shaved off by my grandaughter. I have been growing it since January 1 - this was day 309.
“I’ve never grown my hair like this before, so it will be a relief to get it cut off.”
Hair dresser Jayne Reynolds, from El Esha hair dressers in Broadway, was given the honour of cutting the hair, and a small crowd gathered to watch.
Following the shave, he was joined by mayor of Peterborough cllr John Peach, and mayoress Janet Martin to pose for a picture with George’s wife, Catherine.
Catherine said: “I am very pleased he has had the hair cut off.”
The Royal British Legion are still looking for volunteers to help sell poppies in Peterborough this year. For more information visit the caravan in Bridge Street, Peterborough city centre.
