Former sports editor dies in Oxford hospital, aged 70

Former Stamford Mercury journalist Frank Rawlins has died, aged 70, at John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford.

Starting as a trainee reporter, he became sports editor in the late 1960s before he moved on to the Peterborough Advertiser and Evening Telegraph and later the Hemel Hempstead Echo. He was also editor of the Sheffield Chronicle then the Oxford Journal and Courier.

Educated at the Bluecoat School and Stamford Independent School, he married Mary-Joy Nicholls at Stamford Register office in 1967. She survives him with daughter Samantha and son Christopher.

Mr Rawlins became a freelance writer and editor in 1990 and later wrote several fiction and non-fiction books for publishers Huckbooks. Latterly he turned his hand to landscape gardening.

The funeral will be at Oxford Crematorium on Tuesday at 2.30pm.
