Fire in Fengate which needed dozens of fire staff to put out ‘caused by discarded smoking materials’

Have your say

A fire in Fengate which could be seen from across the city is believed to have been caused by discarded smoking materials.

An investigation into the blaze, which needed more than 40 fire staff to put out on Tuesday (July 19), says rubbish and undergrowth is thought to have been ignited by the materials and spread to wooden pallets.

Cars at the Evans Halshaw dealership were damaged by the spreading flames which appeared to start at Brewers Select next door.

Crews from Dogsthorpe, Whittlesey, Thorney, Stanground, Huntingdon, Wisbech and Market Deeping were all called to the fire after it was reported shortly before 1pm. They had successfully extinguished it by 4.30pm.

There are no reports of any injuries from the fire.

Brewers Select and Evans Halshaw have both declined to comment.
