It feels impossible to escape advertisments these days, whether they be on TV, radio, the sides of buses or even your quality local newspaper.
But that would not have stopped shoppers at Tesco in Werrington from doing a double take after spotting an offer for a coffin pinned up on an in-store notice board.
Nevertheless, the surprise advert has paid dividends for the coffin’s owner, former undertaker Ron Ellis, who says he has sold two of them after spotting them on Ebay before buying them off a Polish man.
And canny businessman Ron (65) from Martin Court, Werrington, says the coffins he has flogged for £300 are the finest he has laid eyes on.
The former undertaker and security man said: “When I saw how well made they are I bought them off a chap 250 miles away and he delivered them here. I’ve never seen a coffin as well made as this one. It’s solid wood, all silk lining and solid glass handles. I might get one myself.”
Ron kept one of the 5ft 10in coffins in his bedroom where friend Damian Hudson tried it out for size.
He said he had bought it for “a little less” than £300 and that the guy he had sold it to had purchased it for himself.
Ron spends a couple of hours at a time searching through Ebay and will buy any items he likes before offering them for sale at the Tesco in The Werrington Centre or classified ad website Gumtree. Other items he has bought include jewellery and a sat-nav.
Ron added: “I don’t make a decent profit but it keeps me occupied and keeps my brain in gear. I love it, it’s the most fun I’ve had.”
