Collections were uninterrupted during the first national lockdown from March to June, with crews classed as key workers.

Residents are being asked to do the following by the council to keep the collectors safe:

. Wipe down your bin handles with disinfectant before and after putting the bins out

. Avoid over-loading your bins – now is not the time to clear out the shed or spare room as this will slow crews down. Any additional black bin waste placed next to your bin will not be collected and bin lids need to be closed

. Feel free to wave, post pictures in the window and let crews know they are appreciated – it really does help to boost morale.

Cllr Marco Cereste, council cabinet member for waste, said: “Our refuse collectors do a vital key role and I know they were appreciated by us all during the first national lockdown.

“By following the advice above residents can help to keep our bin collections running smoothly, as we did last time.”

Meanwhile, a new council report has revealed that the number of subscriptions for brown bin collections has reduced from 21,437 last year to 19,179 this year.

It costs £45 a year to have garden waste collected, although the council is proposing to increase that to £50 a year from April.

Moreover, the recycling/composting rate in Peterborough between April and September this year was 40.71 per cent - a marginal increase on the 39.84 per cent rate from the same period last year.
