Banners were securely hung from bridges in Stibbington and Alwalton, and from a roadside fence in Sawtry, with each one including a different slogan.

The action came ahead of the group’s ‘September rebellion’ which is “protesting Government inaction on the climate and ecological emergency”.

From today, there will be protests across the UK - including outside Parliament - to coincide with the new Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill which is being tabled by Green Party MP Caroline Lucas on Wednesday.

The bill would see emissions from international trade, aviation and shipping included in the UK’s net zero goal and create formal Citizen’s Assemblies on how to cut carbon.

Extinction Rebellion Peterborough said: “There are countless scientific reports and warnings showing the danger we are heading towards and they aren’t being acted on with the urgency needed. We have an incredibly short window of time to turn the tide and protect the environment for future generations.

“Serious changes to our climate are already under way and if we don’t act fast we will reach the point of no return, and our future will see even more extreme weather events, flooding, drought, food shortages, mass migrations and millions of deaths.

“This is not a future we want for our children and we are calling on governments around the world to take action.”
