Some Stanground residents were left waiting a day or more for their green bins to be collected last week.
Waste at some households which was due to be collected on Friday, 9 January was not taken until the Saturday.
In addition, bins in Houghton Avenue were not cleared until the Monday.
Amey, which runs the service on behalf of the council, has apologised for the inconvenience.
A spokesman for Amey said the number of bin lorries operating was a third higher compared to other times of the year.
The spokesman added: “We increased both the number of bin lorries and crew members operating across the city over the Christmas and New Year period in anticipation of increased household recycling.
“It’s great that Peterborough residents are recycling their waste and it is regrettable that even with additional resources we were unable to empty all green bins on Friday January 9 and we would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused.”
