Five bids have been received from would-be buyers of the site of a community growing project in Peterborough.

One is from volunteers with the Green Backyard, the current occupiers of the 1.5 acre site in London Road.

The land was put on the market late last year by owners Peterborough City Council and has a price tag of £750,000.

A council spokeswoman said: “We have received five bids and are currently analysing them.

She refused to say who had submitted the bids.

She added: “We have agreed to give the Green Backyard until March 12 to raise the funds to buy the site. If it cannot raise the money, the land will be sold to the winner of the bid.”

So far, campaigners fighting to save the project say they have raised £14,000 in seven weeks.

Rich Hill, chair of the project, said they had identified a further £1.7 million in available grants from which they would expect to raise £350,000 but they needed at least a year to access the funds.
