Mr Vara has now called for a review as to whether 'the right people' are in charge of education in Peterborough, after the city was ranked 149 out of 149 in league tables.

Mr Vara said: "These results are appalling. Absolutely appalling. From second bottom to bottom. It literally can’t get any worse.

"We are talking here of empowering local children with a strong educational foundation upon which to build for the future. And they simply aren’t getting that.

"I welcome the recent appointment of Jonathan Lewis as Service Director for Education and he needs to ask serious questions as to whether the right people are in charge of local education.

"If they are not, then we need to invest in new people with a fresh approach because the present process is clearly not working and hasn’t done so for many years.

"We owe it to local children and parents to get this right.”

Peterborough has languished near the bottom of the Key Stage 2 tables for a number of years, last year finishing 149 out of 150.

This year, along with placing last overall, it also finished last or equal last for reading, writing and maths scores. The results for boys and for girls were also last in England.
