Improved teaching, impressive pupil behaviour, strong leadership and a relentless drive to raise standards have seen a Peterborough secondary school make the jump from ‘requires improvement’ to ‘good’.
Ofsted inspectors visited Ken Stimpson Community School in Werrington on 26 and 27 April and rated the school ‘good’ in every area.
They concluded that pupils make good progress in a range of subjects including English and maths and that by the time they leave school they are well prepared for further education, employment or training.
Headteacher Richard Lord was praised for his ‘decisive leadership’ and inspectors found that he is well supported by a strong governing body and senior leadership team.
Councillor John Holdich, Leader of the council and cabinet member for education, skills and university, said: “This report is fantastic news and everyone connected with Ken Stimpson Community School should be praised for rising to the challenge of making it a good school which prepares pupils for the next stage of their lives.
“As the inspectors clearly saw, there has been a real drive within the school to improve standards and I am delighted that the headteacher Mr Lord, his staff and the governing body have received the recognition that they deserve. In particular I would like to praise the pupils, who behave well, have good attitudes to learning and low levels of absence.
“I am pleased as punch that 86 per cent of our schools are now judged good or better by Ofsted. We want every child in the city to attend a school rated good or better regardless of where they live and so we will continue to challenge and support those schools that are not yet performing at this level.”
Inspectors also found that the behaviour of pupils is impressive and that relationships with teachers are positive with pupils wanting to learn. Almost all pupils enjoy school and therefore attendance is above average and children of different races and religions get on well together.
Principal Richard Lord said: “This report is a fair and accurate reflection of our school community and the improvements that have been recognised reflect the increasing popularity and strengths of our school.
“I am delighted that the quality of our students has been recognised. Staff at Ken Stimpson have worked tirelessly to secure this judgement from the inspection team, frequently going the extra mile to support our pupils. Of course, we take a great amount of pride from the positive comments cited and continue to address any areas for improvement highlighted in the report.”
