Peterborough MP says city should 'celebrate our successes' as authority sits dead last in school league tables
Labour MP Ms Onasanya claimed progress made in some subjects was a cause for celebration, after the city was ranked 149 out of 149 for Key Stage 2 results.
Peterborough also finished last - or equal last - in reading, writing and maths.

Hide AdThe reading score improved from last year, writing stayed at the same level, while the maths score dropped.
Last year Peterborough finished second bottom of the table (149th out of 150) overall.
Today Ms Onasanya said: "We need to celebrate our successes - its easy to condemn but it seems in doing so we overlook the achievements.
"Year after year we focus on the negative - why isn't the focus on the fact that the statistics show 65 per cent of pupils hit the expected target in reading, 70 per cent in spelling, punctuation and grammar, and 66 per cent in maths?

Hide Ad"These figures show an improvement from last year's totals.
"I am not seeking to ignore the fact that we need to do more and indeed I know teachers are working extremely hard on this which is why we are seeing improvements.
"Let's chart progress not problems and work together with teachers to improve even more."
However, Labour colleague cllr Shaz Nazwaz, who leads the party on Peterborough City Council, said on social media he thought children in the city were being 'let down.'

Hide AdHe said: "These results show the continuing failure of Conservative policies to prepare young people for the future: we believe that it’s not only a question of adequate resources, government should work in partnership with the schools and the communities they serve to ensure that parents, teachers and politicians work together to improve matters. Hands off, inactive government is not adequate to the task.”
