An audience, including media students from Bourne, Morton and Market Deeping, went along to a “discovery evening” about Hereward Television for viewers in the Fenlands and Peterborough in Bourne on Tuesday night.

The event at The Nag’s Head pub in Abbey Road was hosted by station director Alex Geairns who revealed that initial start-up costs for the prospective station totalled just over £106,000.

Mr Geairns said: “There were several TV licences put up for tender by (media and communications regulator) Ofcom, but none of them were taken and Ofcom isn’t up to the capacity (of local TV stations) they were expecting.

“This means that there’s an opportunity for us to join in, with local TV for the Peterborough conurbation and the greater Fenlands.

“We’re effectively talking about a community media resource, for the communty, and we’ve got seed (start-up) funding so people are beginning to realise that this is going to happen.”

Mr Geairns also revealed that Hereward Television was launched on social media platform Youtube last August, with more than 3,000 viewers tuning in for a total of nearly 25,300 hours.

“We’re so far down the road on this thing now that we know who we are and what we’re doing,” Mr Geairns said.

“It’s now about talking to businesses and asking them to get involved.”

“Any investment is a risk but this is a risk worth taking.”
