Police are appealing for witnesses after a woman was assaulted outside a church in Werrington, Peterborough, in the early hours of this morning (Sunday).

The victim, a woman in her late 20s, was walking along Church Street at about 12.30am after having been at The Three Horseshoes pub.

It is believed the woman was assaulted near to a large tree outside the front of the entrance to St John’s Baptist Church.

A Cambridgeshire police spokeswoman said the woman suffered minor injuries in the attack.

Detective Sergeant Graham Newton said: “A police cordon has been put in place around the entrance area of the church, however the service at 8am this morning will still be able to go ahead.

“I would like to appeal to anyone who may have seen the incident happen, particularly those who were also at The Three Horseshoes pub last night, who may have information which could assist our investigation.”
