Ram raiders have struck at a newsagents in Sawtry overnight causing serious damage to the front of the store.
What is understood to be a stolen dark Volkswagen Golf/Seat arrived at Sawtry Post Office/J R Green Newsagents with men inside at 2.48am this morning, Wednesday July 27. A JCB arrived soon after followed by silver Nissan Navara pick-up truck.
The JCB smashed into the shop’s ATM seven times but the thieves were unable to break open the machine which remains in place.
Police were called and were on scene within a minute of the 999 call.
The JCB and a Nissan Navara were left at the scene. Officers are particularly keen to trace a high-powered dark car that fled the scene towards Sawtry with three men inside.
Newsagent John Green, who lives within 50 metres of shop, was woken by his Alsatian dog Xena barking: “She’s always alert. I know exactly when the newspapers and magazines arrive each morning.
“I saw the car speeding off and I heard the crash of the vehicle into the side of the shop. They did not get anything, but there are a few cracks and it’s a repair job. But it will be business as usual today. Bit of inconvenience for the customers, but what can you do?”
Crime scene investigators are due to arrive at 8am. Green End Road around top of Beaumaris Road is likely to be closed until lunchtime.
