Cambridgeshire Police has retracted misinformation it supplied to the Peterborough Telegraph about a report of ‘a body’ being seen in the lake at Crown Lakes Country Park, on the southern outskirts of Peterborough.
An inspector had told the newspaper that yesterday (Saturday, October 10) the force received a report of a body seen in the lake, adding that officers had found a set of a woman’s clothing nearby.
A police helicopter and dogs helped search the area yesterday, with extensive searches going on into the night.
But speaking to the Peterborough Telegraph this afternoon, a Cambridgeshire Police spokesman backtracked on their account saying: “The report was made by two young boys. There was never a body, just a pile of clothes at the edge of the lake which could have been there for any reason.”
The spokesman confirmed the force hadn’t received a formal report of a missing person.
