Businesses in Cowgate have been hit by a spate of burglaries over the Christmas period.

Thieves broke into at least four premises on the city centre road, stealing money and shop products including hairdressing items not available on the High Street.

John Lionel Hair Design, yards away in Queen Street, was also targeted by burglars who are said to have stolen a Sooty and Sweep charity tin containing approximately £20. Another £10 was also taken from the salon while it was shut between New Year’s Eve afternoon and 9am on Saturday when a hairdresser discovered the theft.

The Tanning Shop had £250 stolen at about 3.20am on Boxing Day.

The Beautiful Truth and Antony James hairdressers were broken into between 4.45pm on Christmas Eve and 11am on December 28 with stock, cash and equipment stolen, while a burglary took place at the Fortune Buildings, by the Tanning Shop, between December 30 and Monday morning.

Cambridgeshire police are investigating the thefts and Detective Constable Christian Trinder said officers are keeping an open mind as to whether they are linked.

He added: “Some of the items of stock which have been stolen are hairdressing products which are not available on the High Street, so if you are offered any items like this please contact the police.”
