Tuesday 11.50am: A Peterborough woman has been locked up for four years after hitting a 15-year-old girl in the head with a baseball bat in an unprovoked attack.

Lorraine Hughes, (36), of Cheviot Avenue, Gunthorpe, Peterborough carried out the attack in Hallfields Lane, Gunthorpe at about 6.30pm on May 14, 2014.

Hughes was sentenced on January 15, 2015, at Peterborough Crown Court after pleading guilty to causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

Police Constable Matthew Panks, said: “This unprovoked attack occurred in broad daylight in front of a number of witnesses.

“As well as the injury, distress and fear it caused its then 15-year-old victim, this attack caused great concern amongst her friends and the wider community.

“Despite initially pleading not guilty, thanks to the evidence supplied by witnesses and their willingness to attend court, Hughes pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent to cause serious harm.

“This result clearly highlights the importance of the role people affected by crime have to play in helping to ensure justice is done.”
