One eyewitness said the 41-year-old mother of two was left lying in a pool of blood on the pavement after her assailant shot her twice after first assaulting her outside her library, where she had been holding an advice surgery.

A number of Peterborough politicians have taken to Twitter expressing their shock at what happened.

Ravensthorpe councillor Ed Murphy, who represents the Labour party, said campaigning had stopped as a mark of respect. He Tweeted: “Campaigning suspended follow shooting of Jo Cox a dear friend and campaigner for peace and respect.”

Peterborough MP Stewart said: “Shocking and terribly sad news of Jo Cox’ death. Awful. Prayers for her family at this time.” While former city councillor and Labour parliamentary candidate Lisa Forbes said: “Makes you wonder what makes people hate so much. Thoughts with Jo Cox MP and her family.”

A 52-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the attack.
