A burglar who dodged police after a car chase has been jailed for four-and-a-half years.
Daniel Smith (33) of Crabtree, Peterborough, appeared at Peterborough Crown Court on Monday February 2 after pleading guilty to charges of burglary, taking a motor vehicle without consent and driving without insurance.
The court heard that at about 3am on November 3 last year, Smith walked into a property in Kirkmeadow, Bretton, through an unlocked door and stole electrical items including a tablet and a mobile phone, along with a handbag, car keys and a blue Vauxhall Astra.
Unbeknown to Smith, the car had a tracking device installed which showed the vehicle in the Welland area a few hours later.
Officers flooded the area and a pursuit took place ending in Smith crashing the car and running away.
Officers lost sight of him but he was arrested a few days later at the Hub Hotel in Boongate, Peterborough.
Smith has also been disqualified from driving for two years and has been ordered to take an extended re-test after he has served his prison sentence.
PC Gurdev Singh said: “Smith was arrested and brought to justice thanks to the vigilance and persistence of the officers involved.
“We take burglary very seriously and while we are doing all we can to bring those responsible to justice, I would like remind people to take extra precautions to ensure their homes are secure, particularly locking doors and windows overnight.”
