Paramedic assaulted as he attended 999 call in Ramsey

The incident happened yesterday (Thursday) near High Street, Upwood Ramsey, following an altercation with the driver of a parked van that had been blocking the East of England Ambulance Service crew's access while on their way to a call.

The crew member was left shaken and had to be stood down for the rest of his shift, taking a crew off the road at a time when NHS resources are under pressure.

A spokesman for the ambulance service said: "It is entirely unacceptable that any member of our staff, both on the frontline, or anywhere else, is subjected to abuse of any kind. The Trust will always support staff in pursuing criminal charges if needs be and we will push for the highest possible action to be taken in all cases."

A spokesman for Cambridgeshire police said: "We were called at about 1.35pm yesterday to reports of an assault in High Street, Upwood.

“The victim, an on-duty paramedic, received minor injuries as a result of the incident.

“No arrests have been made at this time.

“Anyone who witnessed what happened should call 101 quoting 35/28245/18.”

Last week a rapid response vehicle had to be taken off the road after eggs and flour were thrown over the windscreen as crews attended a call in Melford Close, Longthorpe, Peterborough.The vehicle was 'out of service for an extended time' while it was cleaned.
