Officers and residents who dashed to try and save a life commended

On 23 July 2016 Constable Robert Bentley and Constable Georgia McCormack were deployed to reports of a fatal road traffic collision involving a car and a pedestrian on Cherry Holt Road in Bourne.

On arrival at the scene a paramedic and ambulance were already at the location and one paramedic was on the ground attempting to get an IV line to the patient. He had been pulled from the vehicle by Martin Keene who was passing by at the time of the incident and stopped to assist.

Passer-by, James Nessa was assisting with carrying out CPR and another passer-by, Wendy Aspinall was assisting with the administration of oxygen with an airbag.

The ambulance crew that was on scene already had a patient on board and did not have space for both patients and as such all CPR was carried out on the grass verge at the side of the road.

Constable’s Bentley and McCormack immediately took over the CPR from James Nessa. Other paramedics arrived on the scene and took over administering oxygen from Wendy Aspinall.

A medical helicopter, doctor and a response paramedic arrived on scene and administer drugs and oxygen to the patient whilst Constables Bentley and McCormack continued with CPR until a defibrillator could be applied to the patient.

Both officers accompanied the patient to the hospital, remaining with his family. Tragically, he passed away a few days later from the injuries he sustained from the collision but Constable’s Bentley and McCormack, Martin, Wendy and James all fought admirably to extend the victim’s life, which enabled his family to see him before he passed away.

Martin, Wendy, James, Constable Bentley and Constable McCormack were given a Royal Humane Society Certificate of Commendation and Royal Humane Society Resuscitation Certificates.
