Neighbours shock at Peterborough murder investigation

Emergency services were called to Taverners Road, Millfield, near the junction with Lincoln Road, at about 6.30pm yesterday (Sunday) following reports of a sudden death.

Scenes of crime officers are still at the house, and officers in full white forensic suits have been examining the property today. The front windows have all been opened while the searches take place.

A police officer was also searching the back garden of the home.

A 63-year-old was arrested following the discovery of the woman, who is believed to be in her 40s.

One neighbour said he was shocked to see the man being led away in handcuffs.

He said: “We were having our Sunday lunch when we saw police and ambulances arriving at about 6pm.

“We saw them handcuff a man and put him in a police van.

“It is normally very quiet here. We have never seen so many police cars in the 35 years we have lived here.”

Another neighbour said she thought the house was a house of multiple occupation.

She said: “There are a lot of eastern Europeans who live there. One man - not the man who was arrested - gave us some roses yesterday.

“We knew them to say hello to. Sometimes they would come round and borrow a screwdriver or something.

“They have lived here for a few years, and we have never had any trouble before.

“It is very sad - and quite scary to see all the police here.”

A Lithuanian man who said he was a friend of people who lived in the house tried knocking on the door, but was moved on by police.

He said: “I do not know what has happened. I have come here and the police are here.
“There are eight people - including two children who live in the house. They are all Latvian.”

Police have not revealed any more information about how the woman died, or any information about the identities of the arrested man, or the woman. A post mortem is expected to take place later today.
