Anti-social and dangerous driving of mopeds, motor bikes and other vehicles on pavements has been an ongoing problem in the Ortons, with police upping patrols to stop the riders earlier this year as residents said the yobs were making their lives a misery, and putting pedestrians at risk.

Orton Waterville councillor Julie Howell welcomed the action against Corleys. She said; “Orton residents will be pleased to know that this individual has been brought to justice and we thank the police for their work on this case.

“Pavements are for pedestrians and motorbikes should be road-worthy and driven on the road with drivers adhering to the Highway Code at all times.

“It may be easy to forget that these bikes should be driven with care when they are so cheap and easy to purchase, but accidents are not so easy to forget and can change the lives of those involved forever.

“If a young person in your household rides one of these bikes, please talk to them about riding safely. The police and the community will not tolerate dangerous driving, and we ask everyone to help us to keep our streets safe.”

Corleys appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on October 1, where he admitted taking a vehcile without consent, dangerous driving, driving otherwise in accordance with a licence, driving with no insurance and riding a motorbike with no helmet. He was also found guilty of an unrelated offence, of breach of a community order in relation to possession of a knuckleduster in a public place.

He was given a 14 week detention order, suspended for 12 months, a Rehabilitation Activity Requirement for 25 days, and ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work. He was also banned from driving for 15 months, and ordered to pay £1,399 compensation to moped owner.
