Man jailed for 'truly horrific' unprovoked attack on Peterborough teenager

The 16-year-old victim was cycling along Princes Gate in the city centre on July 14 at about 2.30pm when his path was blocked by two men on bicycles and a third ran up behind him.

One of the men on the bikes, Aigars Maslakovics, punched the victim in the back of the head before kicking him in his ribs and pushing him to the ground, along with his brand new mountain bike.

Maslakovics, 19, of Crown Street in Peterborough, was arrested on July 20 after the victim recognised him on Facebook.

In interview, Maslakovics admitted being involved but claimed he and the two others had stopped the boy as they thought the victim’s bike was stolen.

He also admitted being involved in taking the victim’s bike, but denied being involved in any assault.

Maslakovics was charged with robbery and found guilty on January 12 after a two-day trial at Peterborough Crown Court.

Today (Tuesday, February 2) he appeared at Cambridge Crown Court and was sentenced to one year in prison by Judge David Farrell.

Following the sentence Peterborough MP Stewart Jackson hit out at the punishment, saying: “What a pathetic and pitiful sentence for such a serious offence. The Judge needs a kick up the backside.”

DC Kevin Poole said: “This was a truly horrific experience for the victim who suffered an unprovoked attack.

“We will not tolerate behaviour of this kind in our city and the sentence passed today shows these crimes will not be taken lightly.”
