A man appeared in court charged with causing a crash which led to the A1 being shut for more than six hours.
Luke Smith, 21, of Lindsell Crescent in Biggleswade, appeared at Peterborough Magistrates’ Court this afternoon.
He was charged with aggravated vehicle taking and possession of a bladed article.
He did not enter a plea to any of the charges.
The charges relate to a car chase on the A1(M) northbound on July 20.
It is said Smith took his mother’s car, before driving up the A1.
The chase ended with a collision involving the Peugeot driven by Smith, police cars and vehicles driven by members of the public. One police officer suffered a fractured elbow.
Delia Matthews, prosecuting, told the court the case was too serious to be heard by magistrates, and said the case should be heard at Peterborough Crown Court.
Smith listened to the court hearing from HMP Peterborough via a video link.
He was remanded into custody until a hearing at Peterborough Crown Court on Friday, August 26.
Nenad Spasojevic, defending, did not apply for bail.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission and The Police Standards Department have been contacted by Cambridgeshire Constabulary following the incident.
