A Peterborough shopkeeper was left “devastated” after thieves broke into his store and left him with £5,000 worth of damage.
Zulfiqar Ali discovered the break-in at Islamic International Stores in Gladstone Street last week.
Every cigarette and phone card had been stolen from inside, in addition to money, credit cards and documents.
Mr Ali, who called the whole episode “a nightmare,” said: “It’s very devastating. We’ve been running this store for the last 40 years under one ownership. Times are really hard business-wise as well.
“Every single night I think ‘what’s going to happen’?”
Mr Ali said the keys to his Mercedes van had also been taken, costing him £300-400 to replace, and that he was now installing an alarm system. He added: “The disappointing thing is I’ve got no feedback from the police. They took evidence but have not said one word.”
The theft took place at about 2.45am on Wednesday, March 16. Four men were seen getting out of a dark coloured car before forcing the shop’s shutters up and entering the premises. They spent around half an hour inside before making their getaway.
The theft was discovered and reported to police at 8.45am. A police spokesperson said: “On Friday the officer investigating made contact with the victim, attended the offence location and obtained CCTV from the store.
“Since then work has been carried out to review the footage and house-to-house enquiries have been made.
“We have been in contact with the victim, however this is very much an ongoing investigation and we will look to keep the victim informed as and when there are any updates.”
Anyone with information on the raid is asked to call police on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
