Jump in violent offences in Peterborough as crime rate rises

Crime in Peterborough has risen by nearly 1,000 offences in the past year, new statistics reveal.

The figures, released by the Office for National Statistics, show that in the year ending December 2019 there were 7,022 violent offences recorded in the city - up 14 per cent from the 6,133 violent offences recorded the previous year.

Across the city, there was a four per cent rise in crime, with 22.372 offences recorded, up from 21,598 the previous year.

The statistics also show a six per cent rise in sexual offences, a 38 per cent rise in stalking, a five per cent rise in robbery, a two per cent rise in criminal damage and arson, a 17 per cent increase in the number of drug offences, and a 12 per cent increase in possession of weapon offences.

However, there was a nine per cent decrease in all theft offences, including a 10 per cent drop in residential burglaries and a 26 per cent fall in shoplifting.

Across Cambridgeshire, there was a five per cent increase in crime.
