Former EDL leader Tommy Robinson to appear in court over alleged fight in HMP Peterborough

Tommy Robinson, 33, from the Bedford area, was arrested at Luton Airport in August 2015 on behalf of Cambridgeshire police.

On Wednesday, January 13, he answered bail at Luton Police Station and was summoned to attend Peterborough Magistrates’ Court on February 3 on a charge of battery.

Robinson (real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon) has hit out at the news on Twitter, suggesting that it is a response to him setting up the English branch of the anti-Islam group Pegida.

The EDL have twice marched through Peterborough, including in March 2014, when over 300 members of the EDL waving banners and chanting marched from the Peacock Pub in London Road to outside Peterborough Magistrates’ Court in Bridge Street with teams of police in attendance.

In December 2010, an EDL leader was arrested following a speech delivered outside Peterborough Magistrates’ Court during a protest.

However, Cambridgeshire police and the Crime Prosecution Service decided not to take any further action.

Robinson quit the EDL in October 2013, saying that he wanted to “counter Islamist ideology” through peaceful means.

A police spokeswoman said: “The 33-year-old man was released with no further action at the end of last year due to lack of contact from the complainant and witnesses, however we have since received communication from them and the case is now moving forward.

“The incident is reported to have taken place inside HMP Peterborough on July 16, 2015.”
