The scheme, which allows the public to get involved in monitoring the speed of vehicles travelling through their neighbourhood, has been presented with 50 new high-visibility tabards.

Volunteers need the tabards to get involved but there is a limited supply. The new tabards will now be used in communities across the county.

The donations came about after a volunteer on a new scheme in Yaxley approached his brother, who is the managing director of Peterborough-based specialist clothing retailer Howsafe.

Superintendent Laura Hunt said: “Speedwatch is an excellent example of volunteers making a difference in their community by working in partnership with ourselves.

“However, they need the right equipment to operate and we are grateful for this generous and worthwhile donation, which will allow more volunteers to get involved across Cambridgeshire.

“Speeding is routinely in the top five issues of concern to local communities and we wholeheartedly support local people working with us to tackle it and make our roads safer.”

Speedwatch is used in areas where speeding has been identified as a priority at quarterly neighbourhood panel meetings.

It is run by the force alongside the Cambridgeshire and Peterborough Road Safety Partnership and is about educating motorists in the law and monitoring any speeding trends.
