Police were called at around 7pm to Southfields Drive in Peterborough to reports that some 40 teenagers were involved in a disturbance close to The Heron pub.

Many of the gang had dispersed by the time police arrived but a 15-year-old boy was found with minor injuries.

Police are treating the incident as an assault and do not believe any weapon was involved.

A police spokesman said: “It is not clear exactly what caused the disturbance in the first place.”

While police said eyewitnesses had heard shouts of paedophile, they were clear this was used only as a form of abuse rather than having any substance to the cause.

Meri Hyde, landlady at The Heron, said: “It was nothing to do with the pub, it was a completely unrelated incident which just happened to accumulate outside our building.”

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to call police on 101.
