Arson attacks keep Peterborough fire crews busy at weekend

Fire crews in Peterborough and the surrounding area were kept busy this weekend with a number of incidents across the city.

At 5am on Saturday they were called to a shed on fire in Pyecroft, Dogsthorpe. The heat from the blaze affected the rear of a home.

An investigation revealed the fire started accidentally.

Later on Saturday morning, at 11.40am, firefighters attended a fire in the open at Old North Road, Sawtry. A passer by could see smoke and called 999. When the crew arrived they found rubble and hedgerow well alight and used two hose reels to extinguish the fire, assisted by the land owner dragging the materials out with a digger. The fire was started accidentally.

On Saturday afternoon, at 4.20pm, fire and rescue crews attended a collision on March Road, Friday Bridge.

They also attended Paston Parkway at the junction of the A47 at 4.40pm, after rubbish caught fire.

At 10pm rubbish and trees caught fire in Meadowlands, March. The crews left the scene at 1.15am on Sunday, and returned regularly to check for hotspots.

At midnight a car was torched in Drayton, South Bretton.

At 7.50pm on Sunday in Breton Avenue, March, trees and hedges caught fire, with crews spending half an hour tackling the flames.

Old tyres and other rubbish was burnt by arsonists at Gunton Road, Newborough at 8pm. Crews used hose reels and drags to extinguish the fire and returned to their stations by 9.05pm.

At 12.40am today (Monday) another car was set alight by arsonists in Potters Way, Peterborough, and a car was destroyed in an arson attack at 3am in Lavender Crescent, Bluebell estate, Peterborough. Another car was also damaged in the incident.

Finally, at 8am today crews from Dogsthorpe and Stanground were called to a fire in Meadenvale, Eastfield. A fire had broken out in the rear garden of a house, affecting the rear of a garage and roof space. Firefighters used hose reels to extinguish the fire by 8.50am and removed roof tiles to ensure the fire was out. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
