The countdown to the Great Eastern Run is on with just 50 days to go before the Peterborough half marathon.

This year’s race, which takes place on October 11 is on track to be the biggest ever with thousands of runners already signed up to one of the UK’s fastest half-marathons.

In 2006, the Perkins Great Eastern Run returned to the racing calendar after a ten year absence and has been a key date in the city’s calendar ever since.

Last year, the event became the highest attended Perkins Great Eastern Run with entries from all over the UK and overseas taking part in either the half marathon or the Anna’s Hope 5K fun run.

Annette Joyce, service director for city services and communications at Peterborough City Council, who organise the race, said: “Entries are filling up fast for the half marathon but there is still time to sign up for the race and the Anna’s Hope 5K fun run.

“If you need any advice on preparing for the race then make sure you attend the free training sessions, which are a great way to meet fellow runners and get helpful tips on getting set for the big day.”

The free training sessions have run throughout the summer for anyone wanting to step up to the challenge. The remaining sessions are on Wednesday 9 September, Wednesday 23 September and Wednesday 7 October at 7pm, taking place at the Peterborough Embankment Athletics Track on Bishops Road.

Annette Ward, corporate and marketing communications manager for principal sponsors Perkins, added: “It is so pleasing to see support for the half marathon, the wheelchair race and the 5K fun run grow year on year. The roads in and around the city centre really come alive on race day, with runners and racers cheered on at every moment around the course. It really is a true gem in Peterborough’s calendar.”

With the World Athletics Championships taking place in Beijing this month, organisers expect more runners to sign up having been motivated by top UK athletes including Mo Farah.

The quickest ever Perkins Great Eastern Run is the 62.16 set by Edwin Kipyego in 2010 while the ladies record of 72.14 set by Purity Kimetto in 2013 remains to be beaten.

The deadline to enter the race is midnight Monday 5 October and no entries will be allowed after this date or on race day. Entries to the half marathon and fun run can be made online. Visit for more information.

Entries can also be made by post or in person at the Visitor Information Centre, 9 Bridge Street, Peterborough, PE1 1HJ.
