Tom Beran, who for almost a decade has run the Coalheavers Arms in Park Street, Woodston, has earmarked a vacant former pharmacy on Westgate for the venture to be called The Bimble Inn. He will, however, continue to run the popular Woodston hostelry.

Aimed at discerning drinkers out for a quite pint or two, micro pubs have been springing up - mainly in small, empty retail units in town centre, for the past decade.

They are described as a “stripped-back” version of a real-ale pub with the emphasis on conversation, quality, an ever changing product and reduced hours.

Tom, who has submitted an application to the city council for change of use of the empty shop premises in Westgate, says The Bimble Inn will serve 4-5 real ales, British wines, real cider, craft keg and a range of interesting premium bottles and cans.

A range of homemade pies and snacks would be available as well as tea and coffee and a selection of newspapers for customers to read.

“Micro pubs are the new boom in hospitality and leisure - they harken back to a simpler time when pubs were just about good beer, and good conversation - no TV, no music, work-friendly hours, “ he says.

“Between us (with wife Michelle) we have over 18 years experience in running award-winning pubs and believe that the Bimble Inn will be a successful go-to venue in Peterborough.

“We have good relationships with all the local micro breweries, the local CAMRA branch, and know what the real-ale drinker likes to buy.”

He added: “ I am very much of the view that the more the merrier when it comes to good pubs. They bring out more beer drinkers and that means more business for everyone.”

Earlier this week beer lovers John Lawrence and Steve Williams outlined their plans for a micro pub outside the city centre an an unspeciified location, which they hope could open in the summer. More here
