The central area of Burghley Park will be closed to pedestrians and unauthorised vehicles in the run up to September's annual Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials for safety reasons.

The measures were first implemented last year in response to increasing regulation within the UK’s construction industry.

However, access to Burghley House via the main house entrance gates on Barnack Road and access to the lower park via the Station Gate entrance will be unaffected.

The restricted area is clearly signposted at key points in the park. It came into force today (Monday, August 1) will last until Thursday, September 1, when the event officially starts. The meausres will then be reapplied from Monday, September 5 to Friday, September 16, so the course can be dismantled.

Event director Elizabeth Inman said: “This safety initiative worked well in 2015 and we are hugely appreciative of the support and understanding shown by local Stamford residents. With the event now attracting over 160,000 visitors, it was the UK’s 7th largest sporting event last year. This has huge benefits for the local economy – it’s estimated that Land Rover Burghley contributes £16m to the local economy - however, the downside is that the build process has become bigger and involves more vehicles and heavy plant.”

This year’s event follows ‘hot on the heels’ of the 2016 Rio Olympics and it is anticipated that visitors to the horse trials will have the opportunity to see many, if not all, of the Olympic team and individual eventing medallists in action.
