Celebrate Diwali with colourful city centre event

Residents are invited to celebrate Diwali in Peterborough city centre.

The annual celebration is being held on Saturday, October 27 from 11am until 5pm.

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights which has evolved into a global celebration. It is celebrated in the autumn during a dark new moon night, with light being a metaphor for God, truth and knowledge.

To mark the start of the celebrations, a lamp will be lit by religious and political leaders.

This will be the fifth year the event has been held in Peterborough city centre and it will feature Indian classical dances, Bollywood dances and stalls selling Indian food, sweets, clothes and handicrafts.

There will also be energetic and colourful performances from the Gujarati, Tamal, Telugu, Kannada, Nepali and Bengali communities.

These include a wide range of classical dance and song throughout the morning and evening.

Rajni Reddy, secretary of the Peterborough Diwali Festival Committee, said: “We are promoting Diwali at Cathedral Square not only as a Hindu Festival, but a cultural event for the whole city, which of course, is renowned for its diversity.

“We hope everyone will come to interact with each other and enjoy the music, dance, food and shopping.”

To commemorate 900 years of Peterborough Cathedral, the Peterborough Diwali Festival Committee will be also be distributing 900 battery operated multicoloured tea lights to all the visitors.
