It was the second title in three years for the pub-cum-restaurant-cum-bed-and-breakfast on the North Bank between Whittlesey and Peterborough, and it certainly put a smile on the face of John and wife Della, who have done wonders with the place since buying a derelict shell in 2010.

“We worked really hard to win that award again this year,” said John after the votes were counted and the top three reveleaed this week.

“We have encouraged everyone to vote for us. We had someone from America stay with us who enjoyed their time here so even they voted.

“It has been a tough year, though,” he added. “We have quiet days during the week because of where we are, then we are absolutely flat out at the weekend. News like this gives you a nice little lift, it is the icing on the cake really.”

Runner-up was the George and Angel at Crowland, and third place was the Rose and Crown at Thorney.
