A new £2.5 million leisure hub in Peterborough’s Ferry Meadows country park opens today (11 April).

Called Lakeside@FerryMeadows, the facility will be the home for two new companies - Nene Outdoors, which is a new watersports and outdoor activity venture, and Lakeside Kitchen and Bar, offering dining and function venue at the park.

Work began a year ago to transform an existing cafe, water sports shop and offices on the site.

Bosses of Nene Park Trust, which runs Ferry Meadows, say they will provide a hub for activity and relaxation in the park.

Nene Outdoors is a new company owned and operated by local entrepreneurs’ Anthony Chapman and Mark Kudlinski.

Mr Chapman said: “With access to Gunwade Lake, Nene Outdoors will cater for many activities on and off the water.

“This includes hire of kayaks, canoes, row boats and pedaloes, group activities such as raft building, land games and orienteering and structured courses in sailing, windsurfing and kayaking.”

“Nene Outdoors also boasts a new 60 seater conference and meeting space with projector, air conditioning and fantastic views of the lake.

“We will also sell campsite and outdoor clothing and equipment.”

Lakeside Kitchen and Bar will be headed by Raj Regmi of Regmi & Sons, who will be known as the operators of Ferry Meadows Café, and Mike Lucy of Company of Cooks.

Mr Regmi, managing director at Green and Pleasant, said “Mike and I are very excited about the whole new opportunity at Nene Park.

“The Lakeside Kitchen and Bar will focus on popular dining out favourites featuring local producers and suppliers complemented with hot and cold soft drinks and alcoholic beverages.”

To add to the facilities at Lakeside, a leading cycle hire facility is also expected to set up later in the spring.

The complex will also still be home to Lakeside Sailing Club, Peterborough Sailability, Nene Bowmen and, a more recent addition, Peterborough Adapted Cycling Scheme operated by Vivacity.

James McCulloch, Nene Park Trust chief executive, said: “As the flagship project within our 2020 strategy for Nene Park, it is exciting to now be within just weeks of reopening the centre.

“We are delighted to have two enthusiastic new tenants on board to work with us in creating what is sure to be the leading waterside activity centre and café in the region.”

Family activity day

There is an opportunity to get a feel for all that Lakeside has to offer on Saturday, 10 May when Lakeside will be hosting a Family Fun day.

There will be opportunities to watch and take part in various activities whatever your experience and ability as well as lots of family friendly offers.
