The organisers of the event, which this year will run from September 1 to 4, are calling on local residents from in and around Stamford to open up their homes and offer ‘pop up’ bed and breakfast accommodation to visiting media and officials during the trials.

The idea is not new and many national sporting events including Wimbledon and Cowes Week have established a precedent whereby local homeowners either rent out their homes or individual rooms, to help supplement the supply of accommodation and earn some extra money.

With about 400 members of the media and numerous officials from as far afield as New Zealand, Australia and the USA descending on the town, organisers said it’s unsurprising that many find securing convenient, affordable accommodation difficult.

Home owners wishing to get involved can specify exactly how much they wish to charge, the number of visitors they can accommodate and what they are willing to offer: from luxury en-suite bedrooms, or entire houses or apartments, to modest room-only provisions.

By offering a room, local residents have an opportunity to really become part of the event, with the possibility of hosting leading equestrian officials who may have ‘hot footed’ it back from the Rio Olympics or media representing global organisations such as the BBC, CNN, Tatler and of course, Horse and Hound.

Director of the Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Elizabeth Inman said: “Support from the local community is integral to the success of our event and we’re once again asking for assistance, this time to help us accommodate some of our most important visitors.

“Not only will it offer a great way for those living close by to bring in some extra revenue, but it’ll also be a unique opportunity to really get to the heart of the action and meet some fascinating visitors to our area too.”

Any local residents who would like to register to provide pop up bed and breakfast accomodation to media and officials at this year’s Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials should e-mail [email protected] for further information.
