It is the end of an era for a Grantham man who began his career in the brewing industry 42 years ago.
Paul Sellars, is currently operations manager at Brewers Select, based in Peterborough, but retires today.
His career with Brewers Select began at Pauls Malt, in Grantham, in 1973 as an electrical engineer.
He was heavily involved with the design and installation of automation at the steep house at Grantham before moving on to fully automating the barley intake and drying facility at Ancaster.
Pauls Malt then sold Grantham Maltings and the Ancaster drying and storage facility to Scottish maltsters Moray Firth.
Mr Sellars stayed at Ancaster through the Moray Firth years seeing the merger through with Hugh Baird to become Bairds Malt.
When the Ancaster operation closed down he moved back to Grantham to take on the role of process manager and eventually became production manager at Bairds.
By 2013 Bairds could see that a new one-stop-shop ingredients supply operation for the smaller craft and micro brewers could be a new opportunity.
This new style of brewer needed smaller milled and bagged quantities and more flexible delivery options so Brewers Select was created to meet that demand.
As the first man on site in February 2013 before the launch of the new business in April that year, Mr Sellars was instrumental in setting up the new operation.
A company spokesman said: “He has been an invaluable help to the legion of new craft and micro brewers, helping with their brewing and technical queries.”
Mr Sellars said: “I have loved my time in this industry and have met and made friends with many fantastic people.”
He added: “I have particularly enjoyed developing the Brewers Select business in the last few years along with the rest of the team. It’s been particularly satisfying to see the resurgence of British beer.”
He said he was looking forward to having more time for he and his wife to spend with their grandson, going on holidays and doing ‘jobs that he has put off’ for the last few years.
