The body of a man was found slumped in an alleyway in the centre of Peterborough on Monday morning (10 February).

The man, who has not yet been identified, was discovered in an alleyway off Cowgate, shortly after 7am on Monday.

Police say it is possible the body may have been there for some hours.

A police spokesman said the man appeared to be in his sixties.

He said that the ambulance service had been alerted shortly after 7am to reports of a man who seemed to have collapsed in the alleyway, which is close to the St John Ambulance Hall.

Medics pronounced him dead at the scene.

The police spokesman said a bicycle was found close to the body and it was possible he may have fallen off the cycle.

He said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the man’s death.

A spokesman for the East of England Ambulance Service said: “We were called just after 7am dispatching a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance to the scene.

He added: “The 999 caller administered CPR to the casualty and emergency services arrived soon afterwards.

“Sadly, there was nothing that could be done and the casualty was pronounced dead at the scene.

The matter has been handed over to the coroner.

Cowgate resident Steve Burch said: “It’s pretty shocking to hear that someone has died in the street.

“There were police officers walking around on Monday morning and a van in the street but I had no idea what was going on.

Mr Burch added: “Cowgate is a busy road and there’s always people around but you never expect things like this to happen.”
