A spokesman for Cadent, which supplies gas in Peterborough, said the problem occurred after water got into the local gas mains.

At 5.45pm the spokesman added: “Our engineers have visited all the properties which reported temporarily losing their gas supply earlier today (Monday, February 26) after water entered the gas mains.

“Supplies have been restored to all of the properties with the exception of a very small number where we have so far been unable to gain access.

“Cards have been left at these properties so the residents can contact us upon their return to arrange for their gas supply to be turned back on, People should not attempt this themselves and should wait for one of our an engineers to do this.

“Cadent engineers carry an identity card and it is important that people ask to see this before letting them into their property. To verify an engineer’s identity call us on 0345 835 1111.”
