Fundraising for a statue of Peterborough United legend Chris Turner is to officially begin as fans seek to raise the £75,000 needed for a lasting tribute to the club’s former player, manager and owner.
Chris passed away on April 27 aged 64 following a long battle against dementia and the city mourned one of its most cherished individuals who provided some of its greatest moments in recent history.
Hundreds attended Chris’ funeral at Peterborough Cathedral, including many well-known faces from the world of football, but now a group of fans are hoping to put in place a permanent reminder of Chris’ contribution to Posh.
Adi Mowles, chairman of the Peterborough Independent Supporters Association (PISA) said: “When we as football fans travel all over the country and see the amazing statues outside other grounds - like those at Portman Road, Elland Road, St Mary’s and The Stadium of Light - we tend to take in their beauty and walk away.”
Chris played 364 times for Posh between 1969 and 1978 and scored 42 goals.
He managed Posh between 1991 and 1993 and led the club to successive promotions and a place in the second tier of English football for the first time in the club’s history.
The money needed for the statue is at least £75,000 and will be delivered by sculptor Sean Hedges Quinn who is responsible for statues of Sir Alf Ramsey and Sir Bobby Robson among others.
Adi, who insisted that the statue project was for all Posh fans and not just PISA, added: “The finished product will give us all a focal point on a match day where we can pay our respects, use it as a meeting point (‘meet you at Chris’) and be something to be proud of in the knowledge that we Posh fans, had paid for this amazing tribute.”
Donations worth close to £20,000 have so far been made, but tomorrow at 7pm is the official fundraising launch with fans invited to visit the Executive Suite at the ABAX Stadium in London Road.
Tickets are £3 but will include a programme and a tribute DVD will be shown.
And tonight, businesses are invited to an event at the same place free of charge which also includes a buffet.
People and businesses can turn up on the door or email email@example.com. Donations can be made at http://www.thechristurnerstatue.co.uk/donate/.
A Chris Turner memorial match between Posh and Cambridge United, another of his former teams, was held in August.
