Anger over huge pile up of rubbish in Peterborough street

Kelly McKenzie said the situation at Lime Kiln Close, West Town, where she has been renting for the past seven years, has become worse with residents in the 50 to 60 flats having only two bin chutes for their rubbish, and no recycling provision.

Kelly (38) said: “It’s been ongoing but I’ve never seen it this bad. It’s been like that for two to three weeks. I’m forever phoning people up but no one accepts any responsibility.

“The smell is awful and there have been rats seen. I’ve lived here for seven years and it’s got worse and worse.”

Peterborough City Council currently contracts waste services out to Amey.

A council spokesman said its Amey officer had told them one of the “underground banks” has been reported to the developer for repair and that excess rubbish has been cleared up in the meantime.

He said a driver was unable to clear up the rubbish on Tuesday as scheduled, but that it was cleared up yesterday.

He added: “We’ve now arranged for some large capacity bins to be put on site to contain the waste.”

An Amey spokesman said: “We are committed to offering a high quality service to the people of Peterborough. Unfortunately, a collection at Lime Kiln Close could not be completed on Tuesday and had to be rescheduled for Wednesday. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.”

Kelly rents from a private landlord, but she said 12 of the properties on the street are managed by Accent Group.

A spokeswoman for Accent Group said: “We are sorry to hear about the rubbish problem on Lime Kiln Close and for the distress it is causing. We want to reassure residents that we are looking into it, but we have not been told why the bins are not being emptied.”

Nationspaces Developments, which is responsible for removing bulk items by the properties, said its cleaning contractor had made the council aware of the situation.
