Residents can take a leap of faith to help support the city's most well known building - by abseiling down the side of Peterborough Cathedral.

All the proceeds from this once in a lifetime opportunity will go towards the Peterborough 900 Campaign, which is raising funds to improve facilities for visitors and worshippers at the Cathedral leading up to its 900th anniversary in 2018.

The abseil, which is supervised by Derby Mountain Rescue, will take place on Friday July 8 and Saturday July 9. Anyone over the age of 16, who is in good health, is eligible to take part in the challenge. Each participant is booked in for a specific time slot and is encouraged to raise sponsorship of around £250.

The event has already proved very popular with over 100 people already signed up. Companies such as O&H Hampton and Hunt and Coombs Solicitors are sending teams to take part and several members of the clergy, including the Bishop of Brixworth, the Rt Revd John Holbrook and Canon Bruce Ruddock are taking up the challenge too (early on Friday 8th July).

A limited number of spaces are available and anyone interested is invited to register online as soon as possible at http://shop.peterborough-cathedral.org.uk/abseil. There is a £50 registration fee and full health and safety details will be given, as well as advice on setting up an online sponsorship page.
