10 YEARS AGO - POSH: Manager Barry Fry claimed his players went from ‘idiots’ to ‘heroes’ when coming from 2-0 down to beat Blackpool 3-2 at London Road thanks to a last-gasp Leon McKenzie winner.

ICE HOCKEY: Pirates were involved in a piece of history - the first-ever tied game in the British National League. Darren Cotton hit their goal in a 1-1 draw at Slough.

RUGBY: A couple of mercurial try-scoring moments from Welsh wizard Celphyn John lit up Borough’s 21-11 win at Northampton Men’s Own.

FOOTBALL: James Horner hit a hat-trick as Hotpoint swept past city rivals Perkins in the PFA Senior Cup. Lewis Richardson and Stu Addinall hit their other goals.

POOL: City potters Carly Smith and John Auchterlonie were both called up to the England squad for the Home Internationals.

HOCKEY: Peterborough Town Ladies went on a second-half scoring spree when bashing Blueharts 8-0 in East Division One. Sharon Stimson hit four goals, Clare Bowtell bagged two and Lyndsey Harrison and Sarah Jackson got the others.

FOOTBALL: Andrew Morris hit a staggering seven goals as Casworth United thumped Freemans 12-0 in the only Sunday morning match to survive following a weekend of torrential rain.


POSH: A couple of David Riley goals and a Ken Charlery effort helped Posh see off Hartlepool 3-2 at London Road and ensured a Gary Cooper penalty miss wasn’t costly. Posh: Barber, Butterworth, Johnson, Halsall, Howarth, Welsh, Sterling, Cooper, Riley, Charlery, Kimble. Subs: Culpin, White.

DARTS: City stars Geoff Gray, Dennis Harbour, Ray Brown, Tony Hedges and Terry Barron, representing the Harrier, won the £5,000 Green King Sure Shot championship final.

GYMNASTICS: Rising star Kathy Everett (15) received her first international call-up when being named in the Great Britain team to take on Switzerland just days after retaining her Eastern Counties title.

WEIGHTLIFTING: Teenage talent Steven Ward captured his third British Under 18 title success. Ward managed a combined lift of 277.5kg at the event at Crystal Palace.

FOOTBALL: Darren Munton scored twice as Bourne beat APV Peterborough City 3-1 in a United Counties League derby clash. New signing Danny Reilly got the other goal.

CYCLING: Jeremy Harrison set a new course record time of 3mins 9secs in Peterborough Cycling Club’s Roadmens Hill Climb between Ketton and Collyweston.

ICE HOCKEY: Darren Durdle, Kevin King and Charles Officer were among the scorers as Pirates crashed to a 9-5 home defeat at the hands of Cardiff in the Heineken Premier Division.


POSH: The city club were left with bruised pride and bodies after a physical York City side won 1-0 at London Road in Division Four. Posh: Freeman, Butler, Collins, Gunn, Smith, Rodaway, Chard, Kellock, Cooke, Hodgson, Massey. Sub: Cliss.

HOCKEY: Mike Yeoman and Neil Collcott delivered the goals as Peterborough Town beat Saffron Walden 2-0 to record a first win of the season.

FOOTBALL: Phorpres ace Trevor Gilbert hit five of his team’s seven goals as they dished out a 7-0 drubbing to Huntingdon United in the Peterborough League. He had another ruled out for offside.

SPEEDWAY: Brothers Andy and Mick Hines bagged 25 points between them as Panthers signed off in style with a 54-24 National League drubbing of Crayford.

RUGBY: Dave Everitt was the scorer of Borough’s sole try during a disappointing 24-9 defeat at Oadby.

BOXING: Focus fighters Ali Asghar, Nigel Fairbairn and Tyrone Murphy all enjoyed victories at a show in Kettering, but Steve Plavecz was beaten on points.

POSH: A first-ever senior goal for local lad Steve Collins helped Posh get back on track with a 3-1 win at Hereford in Division Four. The other goals came from Billy Kellock and Dave Syrett.


POSH: A nightmare error from goalkeeper Mick Drewery condemned Posh to a 3-2 derby defeat at Lincoln City in Division Four. Tommy Robson and Richie Barker had scored the city side’s goals.

FOOTBALL: John Jenkins slammed in a hat-trick as Eye bashed Corby Dismac 7-0 in the first round of the Northants Sunday Cup, but top side Newark Rovers were shock losers.

HOCKEY: Tony Huggins hit the only goal of the game as Peterborough Town overcame Norwich Exiles 1-0. Ron Ballantyne struck a hat-trick as Town 4ths won 3-2 at Harlow.

FOOTBALL: Peterborough Boys crashed out of the English Schools’ Shield when losing 4-0 to Luton Boys at London Road. Pboro Boys: Negus, Sallows, Scotcher, Avison, Rickards, Southgate, Brown, Lutkin, King, Hair, Maison. Sub: Prichard.

POSH: Almost 6,000 fans turned out for a joint benefit match for Posh stalwarts Brian Wright and Ollie Conmy. They saw a Posh team beat a Leicester City XI, including Peter Shilton, 5-2.

RUGBY: Tony Belson bagged both Peterborough’s tries as their awful away run continued with a 34-10 drubbing at Oadby Wyggestonians.

FOOTBALL: Mal Redfearn, Gordon Bull and Colin Rockliffe hit the goals as Stamford beat Retford 3-1 in the Midland League. Flying winger Ken Wade was Stamford’s star man.
