A great event for Peterborough's Green Backyard

The Green Backyard in Peterborough will open its doors to welcome a brand new event next month - The '˜Smugglers Trail' festival which has been running in Kent for six years.

Festival organiser Sophie Bostock helped Peterborough arts organisation Metal programme some of the music for the massive Harvest Festival in the city last year.

She was so impressed by the welcome that, when she secured funding to tour her festival as Smugglers Trail, she added Peterborough to the national tour schedule.

Smugglers Trail is a travelling eco-festival focussing on sustainability and folk and roots music. It showcases radical ideas around local food and green energy in a fun and family-friendly environment, bringing together activists, campaigners, artists and musicians with the public at locations across the country.

Sophie said: “Peterborough is such a great place for Smugglers Trail to happen and there is no better place to host it than The Green Backyard. I’m really excited to be bringing the festival here.

“Our Arts Council funding allows us to make it really affordable as well. Festivals are a lot of fun, but they can also inspire and connect people. We believe that the two go hand in hand. As well as showcasing some of the UK’s best folk and roots bands, we want to offer a platform for new ideas which can help foster community cohesion connected to the stories of their food, energy and land.

“We have some amazing bands headlining, such as the John Langan Band and Honeyfeet, alongside Peterborough’s own Kerry Devine and Opaque.

A delighted Rich Hill, chair of the trustees at The Green Backyard, said: “Smugglers Trail fits perfectly with the ambitions of The Green Backyard. The festival has some really strong messages about the environment but is also a great day for all the family. In addition to the amazing music and talks, we’ll have a kids craft area, delicious locally sourced and ethical food, workshops, traditional crafts and a ceilidh.”

The festival will take place on Saturday, July 16, from 12noon to 11pm at The Green Backyard in Oundle Road. Tickets for the event are £10 each for adults, £5 for ages 12-16, with children under 12 attending free (they still need a ticket though).
