What to expect if you visit a Peterborough pub today

Drinkers might have a long, three month thirst that needs quenching - but the post-covid pub will be one of socially distanced queueing to get in, hand washing, reduced capacity, not a lot of interaction between customers who must be seated at tables - and definitely no propping up the bar.

Chris Parkes, landlord at the popular Draper’s Arms on Cowgate in the city centre said he was not sure whether those keen to venture out for a drink once more were aware of the restrictions that would be placed on them.

“Depending on whether we have a rush on it will take longer for people to get in, no one will just be walking in,” said Chris who has large signs planted at the doors outlining the guidelines all pubs, not just his, will be operating under.

“We have the signs up but we will be explaining the new rules as people wait to come in. I am not sure the details of the restrictions are fully out there yet.

“Things like groups of no more than 6 people still apply, no large groups. Most of our tables are set up for a maximum of four anyway and there will be no pulling up chairs to join people.”

Customers are requested only to enter if they are feeling well and will have to wash their hands or use a sanitiser .

Observing social distancing is a must as is avoiding close contact including shaking hands.

There are signs explaining how to move around the pub on the walls and the floor, and at the bar too - stipulating no waiting. Contactless payments are encouraged at the tills.

Physical barriers between some tables have been installed too and the capacity has been reduced although a new beer garden and roof terrace will help spread customers out further.

“Once the tables are gone, that is it, “ said Chris,

“We do have space outside and people can request a table in the garden. But again, they must understand that if it gets cold or starts raining they can’t just get up and come inside.

“It is great to be opening again and have everyone back from furlough. Staff training has gone well and the set up is as good as it can be. But we are about to enter a new world and we will have to see how it goes,” he added.
