Christmas decorations appear in locked down Peterborough

The first signs the festive season is nearly here have arrived in Peterborough as the mammoth job of putting up the Christmas decorations has begun.

Christmas trees have been put up on lamp posts in Bridge Street and Long Causeway this week in the build up to the lights being switched on.

A huge ‘Merry Christmas’ sign has been put above the Bridge Street entrance to Queensgate - although many shops in the centre are currently shut due to the lockdown.

And a row of green trees has also appeared outside St John’s Church.

Due to the COVID pandemic, there will be no grand public switch on this year, with a virtual event planned instead.

Peterborough City Council have not revealed any more details about when the event will take place, or what it might involve.

The main Cathedral Square Christmas Tree has not yet arrived in the city. Last year was the first time in several years the city had a ‘real’ tree in the city centre, having previously had a fake ‘bauble’ tree. The fake tree has already been put up in Wisbech town centre.
