Looking back: A walk around 70s Peterborough
Peterborough Telegraph reader Andy Cole is a regular contributor to Looking Back and he has sent in another batch of his photographs with a helpful commentary.
Andy wrote: “On 20th April 1971, I took another walk around Peterborough.
“Still working for Firman’s, little did I realize that in August 1971 they would go into liquidation and my world would change again.
“1) Little John’s Cafe , St John’s Street where the garage is now.
“2) St Mary’s School. Note the right of the structure is lighter. This is because a few years before the building was L-shaped in plan and one section (fronting St John’s Street) was demolished (c1965).
“3) Bishops Road Gardens (new section to the east) Old house, known to us youngsters as the ‘deri’. Burghley Academy hairdressers is in the background.
“4) New Offices (now flats) in Priestgate.
“5) The old prefab’ houses opposite Star Road on Bishop’s Road. Now grass parkland after the football pitch was removed a few years ago.’’
Many thanks to Andy for sharing his pictures and memories.
