Looking back: A walk around 70s Peterborough

Andy wrote: “On 20th April 1971, I took another walk around Peterborough.

“Still working for Firman’s, little did I realize that in August 1971 they would go into liquidation and my world would change again.

“1) Little John’s Cafe , St John’s Street where the garage is now.

“2) St Mary’s School. Note the right of the structure is lighter. This is because a few years before the building was L-shaped in plan and one section (fronting St John’s Street) was demolished (c1965).

“3) Bishops Road Gardens (new section to the east) Old house, known to us youngsters as the ‘deri’. Burghley Academy hairdressers is in the background.

“4) New Offices (now flats) in Priestgate.

“5) The old prefab’ houses opposite Star Road on Bishop’s Road. Now grass parkland after the football pitch was removed a few years ago.’’
